Councillors and Officers discussing the fly-tipping situation in Hanley.

Today, as part of a crackdown on fly-tipping in Stoke-on-Trent, Deputy Leader Councillor Amjid Wazir and Etruria & Hanley ward Councillor, Majid Khan, joined officers on enforcement visits in the Etruria area of the city.

They found several alleyways which were full of dumped items, including furniture and other household waste. The enforcement team found several bits of evidence, and fines of £400 will now be issued to those guilty of fly-tipping. Officers make use of CCTV and other evidence to be able to identify and fine the perpetrators.

Labour will take a zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping in our city. We will not tolerate people making other people’s lives miserable. We are investing in additional mobile CCTV and extra environmental enforcement officers so we can get on with the job of cleaning up our city, and we will make sure that those responsible face the full force of the law.

Cllr Amjid Wazir, the Deputy Leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: “We promised our residents that we would clean up our city and today the work begins on fulfilling that promise. The Conservatives have left us with a huge backlog of flytipping incidents, they didn’t take it seriously, but we are investing additional funds and we want to see our neighbourhoods looking good again. We will not tolerate people who blight our neighbourhoods with fly-tipping. We will find you and we will fine you.”

Cllr Majid Khan, who is the newly elected Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, said: “Residents have been complaining about the state of their streets for a long time now. For too long, it was ignored by the last Conservative administration, but Labour takes the issue very seriously. We will not tolerate fly-tipping in our communities. Evidence has been found and we will look to issue fines of up to £400. I hope that this will discourage people from doing it in future.”

Residents are reminded that fly-tipping is a criminal offence and fines of up to £400 will be issued to those caught.
